Girls Girls Girls

Pretty much self explanatory. don't expect tigers or anything.

I based the girls design on some tiger research, so I thought I'd include some of that in as well to set the mood.

The next two are digitally painted as well, I couldn't stop drawing girls so I tried to concentrate on developing silluettes to put all that energy to use.
Both were drawn designs in pencil first.
The first one was done on an Intuos tablet at university and the second one was done using my tiny Bamboo pad with its charming tiny scratchy stylus. The first one took around half an hour during a break, and the second one took three days (varying hours, but still).

I miss flip-flops. Mine broke ages ago and since then I've been wearing heals to the shower

I like the stylized flatness of the shapes developed here, every straight line is created by force depicted by curves. The thin outlines was a labour of love but I didn't want heavy outlines to hinder from the form.

and some more fine ladies:

The first one is a depiction of Yzma from the Emperor's New Groove (brilliant animation). Kronk makes a vague appearance but I wanted to focus on Yzma.

I guess the sheriffs in town ..

This sketch  was possibly influenced by the comic Tank Girl I was reading at the time. Possibly.

I wonder if you noticed that every girl was basically just sitting there.

I don't know if motion within stillness makes sense, and I don't think I realized I was drawing them all stationary at the time, but girl forms are fun to play with even with simple poses. Guys are a bit more challenging, but of course there will be a way that comes only with practice and experimenting
.

How about we end this with three ladies today.

I read in this book on Greek mythology called the God Beneath the Sea and it tells of these three sisters/witches/Fates conjoined in a tree. They re blind and spinning, measuring and cutting threads of life. There seem to be a lot of renditions of these three "witches", like their role in Disney's Hercules (even though I think they had an eye). ANYWAY The book was beautifully illustrated by Charles Keeping, who did his own depiction of the sisters in that tree that I found stunning. His work was really organic and every line and negative space seemed to carry its own meaning. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes graphic and organic illustration. You know who you are.

I haven't been able to post up as much as I would like to this year because I've kept busy working and we have a hectic time ahead at university, but I sincerely want to make the effort to be regular with updating the blog so next time will be sooner :)

Zombies and Baseball

Hello kind folks,

So as usual I'll kick start this with something irrelevant and inaugurate the Chinese New Year ( a bit late):
The year of the wooden horse.
The last year of the horse was a water element one, all the way back in 2002.
This year is considered lucky because the cycle of 60 years within this zodiac animal is complete. Which means the next horse sign would start with fire again till another 60 years when the wooden horse would make another appearance, marking another cycle complete. Whether I'd still be alive then is uncertain, but a girl can hope. Which is also what the new year brings. Hope.

Okay, I'm not that superstitious, legends are interesting anyway. But I love chess and the knight is my favorite unit. Wooden chess sets are pretty radical so the year of the wooden horse is perfect.

A while ago before Christmas, I was part of a project (along with some of my classmates) asked to illustrate a group of dancers as they danced as vintage zombies. What was really cool was we were actually drawing them as they moved, so really quick expressive and cohesive sketches were what came out of it; perfect life drawing for an animator. Here are some initial sketches and concept work for the final thing:

What I was going for was really distorted imagery, but ideally ambient as well.
So using the observational sketches I attempted to design illustrative character driven imagery that was both morbid and ambient with a bit of distortion:

Finally here's a progressive idea for a digital painted illustration (even if theres nothing vintage about it)

And last thing for the day, here's an animated shot from a baseball film that some of my classmates and I created. I had the pleasure of animating an agitated umpire for four seconds. Here are those four seconds ^_^
The pitcher throws the ball at him so he ducks, but this video doesn't have the ball included because that video is even worse light quality because there are so many layers (the layout included)

I'm so sorry again for the terrible light quality :S
but i sort of like him in the middle of no where doing his own thing.

Yours,
Forever a chess fiend
